Cigarette is not a strange thing anymore. There have been many either young or old men consuming cigarette. But the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) has recently issued a fatwa (edict) that cigarette is a forbidden thing. the edict states that smoking is forbidden for pregnant women and children because smoking during pregnancy can have negative impacts on the health of infants and the child development. Not only that, but the smoking can also give negative impacts especially to young men. But the impacts for the young men are not greater than those pregnant women and children so that the law status of smoking is objectionable (makruh).<>
Cigarettes are reportedly from America. After America attained its independence, there have been many Europeans visiting the country to mere see the life condition of Americans. Their life condition has called a great sympathy of European countries including in regard with cigarettes. Not surprisingly, they have finally followed the tradition. Even following their visit from America, they have brought tobacco seeds to their country.
Initially the people have not warmly welcomed cigarettes in their life. But after considering that smoking can also give such inspiration and positive impacts like relieving boredom or helping overcome depression, the cigarettes have warmly been welcomed among European people. Even the cigarettes have become their primary need.
Year after year the habit of smoking has gradually been followed by some Asian countries. It was the same as the scene in European countries, cigarettes have not warmly been welcomed by the governments in various countries. They have gradually welcomed the cigarettes enthusiastically after many of their citizens have consumed the cigarettes. Year after year, month by month and day after day, the cigarettes can come to Indonesia, a country that is rich of natural resources and has been influenced by the habit of the Europeans even it has been one of the world's countries planting tobacco.
Indonesia itself has become one of the leading cigarette producing countries in the world because of the fact that many Indonesian people have consumed cigarettes. Even most of those working in cigarette companies are women or housewives.
The cigarette companies have also helped the state in regard with the foreign exchange income because they companies have given the state total contributions worth some 4.17 billion and helped relive the state's burden. The companies, In addition to having helped the government, have also played an important role in dealing with problem and created new fields of employment.
The negative impacts of smoking
Concerning the law status of smoking, we are really very difficult to both implement its fatwa (edict) as issued by the Indonesian Ulema Council recently and deal with the its role which can possibly confuse people. On the one hand, cigarettes have considerably been useful for helping deal with unemployment and caused of death in active and passive smokers on the other. Not surprisingly, the cigarettes are like a double-eyed knife having both benefits and detriments.
If seen from the negative impacts, the danger of smoking is very big. In accordance with a research, there are always people who die every year as a result of smoking. Once people light up cigarette, the billowing smoke containing a sharp-tasting liquid called nicotine is very much in the air. For that reason, the cigarette smoke can be dangerous to people who smoke and people around the smokers who are not smokers (passive smokers) for smelling the cigarette smoke.
Through The Book of Cigarette, the Reading for Smokers and Haters, the writer explains more about the benefits and the detriments of smoking. Since a long time, smoking has been a habit of both kiai (clerics) and their santri (students). Not surprisingly, the smoking has still been such a culture and preserved. The fatwa related to smoking has been familiar with pesantren circles.
When we visit clerics' house, smoking has likely been their habit as that even been conducted by the leaders of Pesantren Tebuireng in Jombang East Java. Once santri visit their kiai's house, they must be offered with cigarette.
Smoking has till now been a habit from generation to generation. Though it is like a double-eyed knife, it is really a phenomenon for people.
We need to look into our selves in dealing with the law status of smoking because there have been many ulema allowing and prohibiting it. I think there will be no such an end if we examine the benefits and the detriments of smoking. At this point, the writer calls for the importance of being careful in dealing with the law status of smoking.
In terms of the danger of smoking, the writer says in each packaging of cigarettes there has clearly been a warning message that smoking may cause cancer, heart attack, impotency and problems during pregnancy as well as affects the health of the newborn. Cigarettes are absurd things in the reality of life which may contain benefits, goodness and detriments.
In understanding the controversial law status of smoking, the work written by Muhammad Yusus BS is very interesting to note for referring to dissenting opinion of many prominent ulema. In addition, the 104-page book is very easy to understand and will help you get more understanding in regard with the law status of smoking. Hopefully!
