A number of districts and towns in Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam province were hit by flashfloods on Sunday following torrential rains in the past few days, rendering thousands of people homeless.
Antara reported hundreds of villages in the eastern coast of the central part of Aceh were destroyed by the flashflood, the immense calamity after the December 2004’s tsunami which leveled the western part of the country’s westernmost province.
<>The flashflood disrupted land transportation routes connecting Banda Aceh and East Aceh district as well as East Aceh district and Aceng Tamiang district.Meanwhile, Aceh administration public relation staff M. Nasir said here Sunday basic commodities prices went up and some gas stations faced oil shortage.
The ongoing flashfloods in Aceh Tamiang was considered the greatest disaster following the tsunami that hit Aceh two years ago, he said.
The flashfloods has killed about 100 people and hundred others went missing.
Many people in Kuala Simpang, the capital of Aceh Tamiang, were trapped in their flooded homes. (dar)
