Kiai Tholhah calls on people to preserve pesantren values

Member of the Supreme Council of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) KH M. THolhah Hasan, popularly known as Kiai Tholhah, said here on Monday that pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) have long-standing values that must be preserved, namely egalitarianism, populism, religiousity, ethics and humanism.

"Pesantren have such important values as egalitarianism, populism, religiousity ethics and humanism. These values must be taken into account, especially by those engaged in social activities," he said.
Kiai Tholhah called for the importance of pesantren circles in both developing and preserving such values in the community.
He also called on those graduating from pesantren to pay more attention to the need of the ummah (people) without considering their different background.
According to Kiai Tholhah, pesantren have long contibuted to the nation in propagating inclusive values that are in line with the teachings of Islam, especially the so-called Ahlussunnah wal jamaah (Aswaja).
In terms of the Aswaja, he said, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) had long been committed to maintaining and preserving it thorugh pesantren and many other religious institutions / madrassa. (masdar)
