Chairman of lawmaking Body (Syuriyah) of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Masdar Farid Mas'udi said that Indonesia had big potential to lead the Islamic world in the future for having strong religious social organizations outside the government.

"We have a great potential to become the Islamic world leader because Indonesia has strong (religious) social institutions," Masdar said on the sidelines of a seminar at the Ar-Raniry Darussalam High Institute of Islamic Studies, Banda Aceh on Tuesday (5/4). />
Masdar said the potential should properly be used by the world's most populous Muslim-majority country by increasing religious understandings for all people so that it will expectedly be center for Islamic civilization in the future.

Masdar was of view that of some 50 Muslim countries, "Indonesia is the only country has the chance to lead the Islamic world".

He added that the existence of strong religious and social organizations having no direct connection with the government would be capable of forming a balance in dealing with the moral and people guidance.

"This is a capital that must be maintained by Indonesia to build a better Islamic civilization amid various understandings having emerged recently," he Said.

According to him, the various understandings should brilliantly be addressed by every Muslim by building partnership and strengthening resilience and not to easily be trapped into different beliefs.

"That means, if we want to be free from misleading teachings, then strengthen (our) beliefs for not participating in the group," he said.

Present also at the occasion were KH Syakur Yasin, the leader of the Cadangpingan Islamic boarding school, Indramayu, West Java; Chairman of the Aceh NU Regional Board (PWNU) Tgk H Faisal Ali; and  Head of the Aceh Islamic Shari'a Office Rusydi Ali Muhammad. (nam)
