Pangkalpinang signs MoU sister-school relationship with Malaysia

Pangkalpinang city on Saturday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the establishment of a sister-school relatinship between one of its elementary schools and a similar school in Petaling in the Malaysian state of Selangor, a local official said.

"A group from the neighboring country is in Pangkalpinang from Friday (June 22) to Saturday (June 23) to materialise the sister- school cooperation between the Malaysian elementary school in Petaling, Selangor state, and State Elementary School (SDN) 3 in Pangkalpinang," the city`s mayor, H Zulkarnain Karim, said here Saturday.<>

During its stay in Pangkalpinang, the Malaysian group visited a number of elementary schools and attended panel discussions on the sister-school cooperation.

According to the mayor, the agreement on the sister-school cooperation had the full supports of the Malaysian and Indonesian governments in an effort to expedite the improvement of the quality of education in Pangkalpinang.

"The cooperation is expected to produce concrete results in efforts to improve the quality of education in Pangkalpinang (Indonesia) and Petaling (Malaysia). The cooperation will be extended with the exchange of students, teachers, curriculums and cultures," he was quoted by Antara news agency as saying.

He said the quality of education in Malaysia was good and thus the cooperation was expected to encourage schools in Pangkalpinang to become the best ones at national and international levels.

The cooperation was only at the initial stage as in the near future, Pangkalpinang would set up cooperation at junior high school and senior high school levels with China and Korea. (dar)
