The future of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) is highly dependent on the seriousness of NU component in strengthening the 90-year-old organization. One of efforts that must be done is by strengthening the organization through education.<>
"The fate of NU in coming 10 to15 years whether it is hated or loved by people still relies on its ability to strengthen the education," said Chairman of Lamaking Body (rais syuriyah) of the NU Branch Board (PCNU) of Kudus KH Ulil Albab Arwani when delivering a religious sermon to commemorate the NU 90th anniversary at the PCNU headquarters, Jl Pramuka 20 Kudus, Central Java, on Sunday (26/5).
The son of the late KH Arwani Amin, who is usually called Gus Bab said that education could effectively instill an understanding and love for the children to NU.
"So strengthening NU is, among other things, by strengthening education of our children so that they are fully prepared to become the next generation contunuing the NU struggles," he said.
Looking at the history of the struggle of the founding founders of NU, Gus Bab said, the NU strength had till now been perceived as a strong anchor for the development of Islam in the country.
"In a religious struggle, NU does not propagate (its teaching) by using violence, radicalism and coercion," he said.
NU has always propagate its fundamental principles in developing a universal Islam, namely, tawasuth (moderation), tasamuh (tolerance), tawazun (harmony), i'tidal (consistency) and enjoining good and prohibiting evil 9amar ma'ruf nahi munkar).
"From the basic principles, NU did not approach anyone by using extreme manners," Gus Bab said, adding that there had been many calling themselves as Muslims but are not in accordance with the teachings of Ahlussunnah wal Jamaah (Aswaja).
