Foreign Minister R.M. Marty M. Natalegawa, representing the government of Indonesia in the fourth Summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, on August 14-15, 2012, supported OIC decision to freeze Syrian membership.<>
The summit was held in a bid to respond some main issues currently faced by muslims such as the situation in Syria, Palestine, Mali and the latest situation relating mass killing of Rohingya muslim in Myanmar, a release made available to ANTARA from the Foreign Ministry said here on Wednesday.
After going through some discussions and debates at senior ministerial level meetings, the summit then resulted in "joint communique" and OIC resolution on Syria, Palestinian, Rohingyas muslims in Myanmar and that in Mali.
In the context of Syrian issue, the summit then decided to freeze Syrian membership of the organization for the time being.
Additionally, Indonesia also called on the head of states who were present in the summit to ask the Security Council of the United Nations to take such an action designed to stop the ongoing violence and blood shed in Syria.
"Violence and murder should be stopped. International community including the United Nations should not take no notice of it, as the war in Syria has actually resulted in human tragedy," Marty said.
