ISNU holds its 1st meeting in UI

The Nahdlatul Ulama Scholar Association (ISNU) held its 1st National Work Meeting (Mukernas) at Wisma Makara, University of Indonesia (UI), Depok on 13 to 15 September.<>

The opening ceremony was attended by the General Chairman of the Central Board of NU KH Said Aqil Siroj, the UI Rector Muhammad Anis, and former UI Rector Gumilar Soemantri.

The scholarly event taking up organizational issues, programs and recommendations was participated by 33 ISNU representatives across the country.

In his speech, the Chairman of ISNU Ali Masykur Musa stated, for one and a half years of his leadership, the Central Board of ISNU had formed and inaugurated a number of provincial and regency/municipal level boards.

He said there had been many outstanding academics, scientists and intellectuals joining the organization.

"There have now been some 454 professors and 1928 doctors joining the (IS)NU from different backgrounds, such as engineering, physics, and others, not only in religion," he said.

He hoped the presence of the thinkers could contribute to a more dignified Indonesia, saying the progress of a nation, should not be cut off from their cultural roots, "but how to be able to harmonize the local values with modernity."

In the field of economy, he said Indonesia could not shut out of the global market, but he stressed the importance of the state in playing its roles when the market mechanism could not work.

Meanwhile, in the field of politics, democracy must uphold the dignity of freedom.

Some important topics in the Mukernas are how to utilize a large number of professors and doctors to develop higher education in the NU.

There are series of events in the Mukernar such as discussing a book titled Indonesian Revival 1945-2045: The Ideas of NU scholars, while on Saturday, there will be a social work by collaborating with The Special Forces Command ( KOPASSUS).
