Minister of Education and Culture M. Nuh said, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) was a very large organization. "Therefore it has a very strategic role in the development of Indonesia.<>

In the opening of the Central Java's NU regional meeting on Friday (29/3) at Pesantren Al Anwar 3 Sarang, Rembang, he called on NU to change its paradigm in order to become the agent of change in this country.

According to him, there are three things that must be done by the Indonesia's largest Muslim organization to contribute to the development of the nation.

Firstly, NU should not be separated from the academic tradition. Academic tradition is an intellectual tradition that is based on the values of the Qur'an.

Secondly, NU should strengthen economic and business development resources. NU should be able to find and explore funding sources for financing organizations from their own cadres. NU should not be stuck in transactions that are inconsistent with the teachings and spirit of ahlussunah wal Jamaah (Aswaja).

Thirdly, NU should be able to present in addition to preserving its traditional values into modern forms. All this, he said, was necessary so that the Aswaja values could be in line with and keep up with any development.
