NU asks people to exercise restraint

Law enforcement officers are expected to act in fair and balanced ways and be able to differentiate between the legal facts and and the motives of an inter-communal clash in Puger, Jember, which involved a group of Sunnis and Shi'ites.<>
Chairman of the Lamaking Body (Rais Syuriyah) of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), KH Hasyim Muzadi made the remarks of the sidelines of a religious gathering in Pugerkulon on Monday (16/9).
According to Kiai Hasyim, the public has expected the police to take firm measures in handling the case that resulted in one death.
"Therefore, I hope that the police could be fair in dealing with the case by taking into account the motives of the unrest," he said.
The Secretary General of the International Conference of Islamic Scholars (ICIS) called on NU board members and Muslim scholars to strengthen the Ahlussunnah wal Jamaah through various peaceful ways.
Kiai Hasyim was accompanied by the MUI Chairman Prof. Halim Subahar, Secretary of the Jember's Branch Board of NU KH Misbahussalam PCNU Jember, and some NU board members of Kencong.
The incident occurred at an event to mark Independence Day organized by Darus Sholihin Islamic boarding school, of which Habib is principle, in Puger. A group of villagers, led by local cleric Fauzi, tried to put a stop to the festivities and a heated argument ensued, which resulted in the destruction of the school, its mosque and office buildings.
