The nation's largest Islamic organization, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), is scheduled to issue a fatwa (Islamic edict) that forbids character assassination during its upcoming national conference of Muslim scholars from Sept. 14 to 18.<>
"The NU feels morally obligated to issue a fatwa against character assassination," NU executive board member KH Arwani Faisal said on Wednesday (12/9), as reported by Antara news agency.
"We are concerned because it is becoming an increasingly prevalent phenomenon in society."
He added that character assassination can be seen in all areas of society.
It occurs in political institutions, civil society organizations, and even in religious groups. Arwani also pointed out that the media are often also part of the problem, because they intentionally or unintentionally spread sensitive information that might damage a person's social standing.
