Floods still disturb good supplies in Jakarta and inverons

Good supplies to various markets in Jakarta and its buffer towns of Bogor, depok, Tangerang and Bekasi were still disturbed by floods that had hit the areas since Friday last week.
"The distribution of goods to various markets are still disturbed by floods which have affected the regions since seven days ago," Secretary of the Indonesian Traders Assocation (APPSI), Ngadiran, said here on Thursday.<>
He said that the disturbed distribution of commodities to the markets due to floods has caused the prices of a number of essential goods to soar at the retail level.
Ngadiran said the basic commodities whose prices were increasing included rice, sugar, cooking oil and egg.
He said that the price of cheap rice rose from Rp4,200-Rp4,300 per kg to Rp5,000 per kg, sugar from Rp6,500 per kg to Rp7,200 per kg and the price of cooking oil increased by about Rp400 to Rp500 per kg.
The floods have killed at least 39 people in Jakarta and environs.
As reported by the national news agency Antara, several areas of Jakarta have been inundated following days of torrential rains which caused some of the rivers and canals which criss-cross the city to burst their banks.
The floods since Thursday (Feb. 1), have forced around 300,000 to take refuge to safer areas. (dar)
