Jakarta, NU Online
The United Development Party faction (FPP) supported Monday (7/8) the edict (fatwa) issued by the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) that prohibits Muslims from broadcasting, publishing and watching infotainment news.
Chairman of the FPP Endin AJ Soefihara said that the prospective verdict should be immediately socialized in society. “People need to respond to it positively because its aim is to stimulate critical culture,” said Endin in Jakarta.
Endin argued that many people have recently tended to imitate celebrities’ glamorous life style caused by the gossip shows, locally known as “infotainment” as the products of entertainment journalism.
“It’s ok if what he/she imitates is fine. If he/she imitates such things like consumptive culture, glamorous life style and news about divorce, that’s dangerous for the people,” Endin said.
The edict was issued by the PBNU through a national ulema meeting and major conference held in Surabaya on the last July 27-30.
This fatwa is raised due to the ulema are now concerned the gossip shows will destroy young people and because the Qur’an strictly forbids spreading gossip. (rif)
