The Indonesian Embassy here for three days starting Thursday opened books of condolences for sympathizers in Great Britain and Ireland who wished to express their condolences on the death of former President Abdurrahman Wahid.
The books of condolences were opened at the Embassy at 38 Grosvenor Square, London on Thursday, Monday and Tuesday, the Embassy’s third secretary, Billy Wibisono told Antara here Friday.<>
In addition, the Embassy will also hold Quran reciting and praying services for the fourth Indonesian president on Sunday, he said, adding that several diplomats had expressed condolences on Gus Dur’s death.
Gus Dur, who was born in Jombang, East Java province in 1940 was also known as an Islamic scholar and former chairman of the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), the largest Muslim organization in the country.
During his tenure as Indonesian president, he was known as a moderate and played a significant role in building inter-religious dialogue and opened doors to other cultures, such as Indonesian- Chinese culture. (ant/mad)
