General Chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Hasyim Muzadi said that a religious conflict was not always caused by religion. Instead, it was most of the time caused by those whose interests to heat and play religious groups against one another.
“Sometimes the conflict was caused by poverty or people’s low education. For that reason, we need to trace the problem’s roots before suggesting that it was a religious conflict,” Hasyim addressed the guests of Thailand’s National Security Council at the NU office Tuesday (12/12).
Hasyim said that military approach wouldn’t overcome it. Rather it could be resolve by involving local religious leaders in campaigning universal religious views within society.
Thailand’s government didn’t have to involve itself through militaristic measures in conflicting regions. “So we need to straighten out misunderstandings between the government (military) and the local people,” Hasyim added. (nam)
