Kyoto, NU Online
Chairmen of Indonesia’s largest Islamic organization, the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) Hasyim Muzadi was named to be president of World Conference on Religion for Peace (WCRP) in its 8th meeting which was held in Kyoto on Aug 25-29.
The WCRP was a world-wide movement, consisting of men and women of faith who meet to share their concerns about the many factors and situations which threaten world peace and deny human dignity.
In addition to holding conferences of religious leaders, WCRP has also been involved in several education/action/service programs.
The first of these was the Boat People Project in 1976-1977, established by the Asian Conference on Religion and Peace and the World Conference on Religion and Peace early in December 1976.
Muzadi was named WCRP president since the NU prominent figure has played important roles in developing peace both at national and international levels.
The leader of Islamic Boarding “Pesantren” School Al-Hikam, Malang, East Java held a world Islamic ulema and scholar conference some time ago and helped find solution to conflict in Muslim-predominantly South Thailand. (mkf)
