The historic Recep Paşa mosque, which was built on the Greek island of Rhodes during the Ottoman era, collapsed on Thursday.
Following the collapse of two of the four main pillars, the entire structure collapsed, the Anatolia news agency reported on Thursday.
Kyriakos Magos, an architect working for the Rhodes municipality who oversees renovation projects of the island's historic buildings, said the mosque had deficiencies in its structure and for a long time was being supported by piers, but finally collapsed.
Magos said the city had started a renovation project in 2004, but due to the lack of sufficient funds, the project did not produce any substantial results.
Neither the Greek Ministry of Culture nor the EU provided any financial support for the renovation project, Magos said, although he applied to these institutions several times.
Recep Paşa mosque was built in 1626 and was decorated with Persian tiles. (dar)
