The House of Representatives has listed a bill on the revision of Law No. 13/2008 on haj pilgrimage management in its 2012 national legislation priorities.
The House proposes an independent body to organize the haj pilgrimage, not under the Religious Affairs Ministry due the ministry’s poor performance in haj pilgrimage management.
“Our proposal is to detach the function of the regulator from the organizer. The new organizer will later report directly to the President,” Chairun Nisa, deputy chairman of House Commission VIII overseeing religious affairs, said Monday as quoted by kontan.co.id.
The House also proposes that the revised policy should control minor haj, luxury haj pilgrimages and haj pilgrimage perpetual funds.
“The perpetual funds should be put into law,” Chairun said.
Religious Affairs Deputy Minister Nazarudin Umar was among those against the revision plan, arguing that the existing law was still relevant and that the government was experienced in managing the haj pilgrimage.
“Remember, the risk is too big,” Nazarudin said, but did not elaborate on what he meant. (jp/dar)
