Jakarta, NU Online
Today modern era has recently concluded that despite recent impressive advances in technology, means of production and availability of knowledge, human being are now more out of tune with their own selves and more susceptible to damaging conditions such as neuroses, depression and other psychoses.
“Today (in modern era) human beings have most of the time based themselves on materialistic and consumptive manner. That is why we find that such spiritual disorders continue to spread. As for me, spirituality is a way of life,” Jalaluddin "Kang Jalal" Rahmat said to NU Online at Jakarta’s Borobudur Hotel, Wednesday (21/6).
“We need to consider the concept in light of our understanding of religious values, say that purification (tazkiya/zuhud). We should purify our hearts and character from bad manners and to inculcate in spiritual formation,” Jalal added.
Regarding the earth quake hit both Yogyakarta and central Java several weeks ago. Jalal suggested that the Saturday’s victims, most of them are Javanese (kejawen), they had high spirituality.
“We can see that the victims in Yogyakarta and Central Java have made such a migration from bad desires and traits to good character and manners just to achieve the highest level of moral virtue. Yogyakarta and Central Java as “Javanese” followers had high spiritual quality rather than Aceh as religious people,” Jalal said. (dar)
