Around 300 victims of the Lapindo Brantas hot mudflow disaster rallied outside the State Palace here Monday to demand adequate compensation for property they had lost because of the calamity.
The protesters hailing from Tanggulangin, Sidoarjo, East Java, demanded that the government give them adequate compensation for the homes and lands that had been flooded by incessant mud coming out from a Lapindo Brantas gas well in Sidoarjo.<>
"We are here (outside the State Palace) to demand that the government compensate us 100 percent in cash and that the payments be made to us directly," Sony Puji Sasono, leader of the "Solidarity with Lapindo Mudflow Victims Alliance," said on the sidelines of the rally.
Sasono said that after staging the rally in front of the State Palace, the demonstrators would be received by the Coordinating Minister for People’s Welfare. Later in the day, they would also bring their case to the Parliament Building.
"If our demand is not met, we will stay in Jakarta," he said as quoted by Antara news agency.
The victims, mostly residents of the Tanggulangin Anggun Sejahtera (TAS) I housing complex, managed to leave Surabaya, East Java, for Jakarta despite efforts by the Surabaya police to prevent them from proceeding to the capital city.
Upon their arrival in Jakarta, they gathered at the Proclamation Monument in central Jakarta and marched to the Palace on Monday. (dar)
