Nahdlatul Ulama Welfare Family Institution (LKKNU) was concerned over the population explosion facing Indonesia. One of recommendations proposed is aimed at overcoming population affairs by involving clerics (ulama) in any population policy.
“The clerics’ involvement having been so far put aside in the population policy should be now replayed. It’s not enough for them to be mere supporting players,” Chairman of LKKNU Otong Abdurrahman told NU Online on Thursday.
<>The recommendation was produced through its ninth national meeting several days ago in Citolo Bogor. Present at the occasion representatives from Riau, West Sumatra, West Kalimantan, Gorontalo, NTB, NTT, and so on.Formerly, Indonesia has successfully decrease the population growth from approximately 2.5 percent per year to 1.35 percent. This has of course involved the clerics and religious leaders’ roles in campaigning the importance of family planning to people.
According to Otong, the clerics could be regarded as key players on account of their direct involvement in daily life. They need to participate in formulating strategic measures dealt with population affairs. (mkf)
