Jakarta, NU Online
As many as 14 individuals representing religious social organizations held a meeting at the NU's headquarters in Jakarta on Friday. They were committed to closing ranks in campaigning Islam as a blessing for the universe.
The meeting was marked by the declaration of Islamic Organizations Friendship Forum. It was deliberately set up because there has been no an organization both clearly and purposefully accomodating the shared interests of Indonesian Muslims.
The 14 organizations were, among others, Nahdlatul Ulama (as the host), Muhammadiyah, Al Irsyad Al Islamiyah, Persis, Ittihadiyah, and Matlaul Anwar, Arrobitoh Al Alawiyah, Syarikat Islam Indonesia, Perti, Ikadi, Azzikra, PITI, Indonesian Council of Islamic Propagation (DDII), and the Association of Muallaf Community.
General Chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH. Said Aqil Siroj said that the forum was aimed at strengthening the position of Islam in Indonesia in addition to being a bridge in eliminating any possible differences among Indonesian Muslims. The forum was also expected to deal with religious radicalism which has increasingly pushed Islam into corner and often been considered as a religion of terrorism supporters.
"This forum is essentially to unite Muslims in order not to disintegrate. Even if there are still differences, it's just little things like problems on khilafiyah," Siradj said adding in any difference there was a beauty. (enh)
