Islamic Boarding “Pesantren” School Al-Kholidiyah, located in Widorapayung Wetan, Binangun, Cilacap, West Java, has functioned as refugee shelter for Monday’s tsunami victims.
“The first reason of theirs (refugees) is that in this building (pondok) there is a high place. Second, they feel safer together with a cleric (kiai,” Said Kiai Mahfdh to NU Online, Saturday (22/7).
The member of Binangun’s NU Advisory Council said, there have been about 600 people coming from four villages since the Monday’s tsunami.
The refugees (men, women, and children) were received in the pesantren’s mosque and dormitory. “The main thing is they together with santris (student), there were some sleeping in the mosque and others in the dormitory,” he said.
he added that there were some of the refugees have not returned home yet due to the fear of the following tsunami. In addition to the condition of their houses damaged by the large wave of the tsunami. (rif)
