President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono asked Muslims to practice Qur’anic universal values as part of their efforts to build good characters.
The President made the appeal in his speech in a ceremony to commemorate the descent of the holy Quran at the As Syuhada Grand Mosque in Pamekasan, Madura, East Java province, on Monday night (9/10).
The president also called on Muslims to be wise in responding to any nation’s problems. In the era of reformation and democracy, he added, every person must have considered that there were such moral codes as basic principles.
“Never say that in the era of reformation and democracy, people can talk about anything and do anything without thinking of others. Use the moral principles please as taught by the Qur’an,” Yudoyono said.
Before departing for Pamekasan, Yudhoyono visited the mudflow disaster site at Sidoarjo, East Java, on Sunday to observe preparations for the dumping of the mud into the nearby Porong River.
During his brief visit to Siring village, Porong district, the President was accompanied by a number of ministers, including Coordinating Minister for the People's Welfare Aburizal Bakrie, whose family indirectly owns Lapindo Brantas Inc., which operates the gas exploration well at the center of the disaster.
