RI welcomes formation of Palestinian Unity Government

The Indonesian government has welcomed the creation of a Palestinian government of national unity as a follow-up to the agreement reached in the Mecca meeting last month.
Indonesia is of the view that the formation of a united cabinet will increasingly strengthen Palestinians’ struggle for an independent state, the Foreign Ministry said in its official website on Tuesday<>.
It is expected that the international community can cooperate with the new Palestinian government without imposing any conditions on it, the ministry said as quoted by Antara news agency.
Indonesia hoped the formation of the first ever national unity government would serve as a momentum for the Quartet of Middle East peace mediators -- the United States, European Union, United Nations and Russia -- to revive peace negotiations to put an end to the Palestine-Israel conflict.
Indonesia will always be consistent with its current stand, to continue its support for and cooperation with the Palestinian unity government in a bid to create an independent Palestinian state, the ministry said.
The national unity government was formed after rival factions Hamas and Fatah reached a power-sharing deal, ending months of fighting that erupted since Hamas took office last year. (dar)
