Indonesia reasserts stance against US decision on Jerusalem

President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has reasserted Indonesia's stance in opposing the United States' decision to move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, saying it would hamper peace in the disputed area.
Speaking at the opening of a trilateral meeting between clerics from Indonesia, Pakistan and Afghanistan at the Bogor Palace on Friday, Jokowi said that the US’s move to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital had deeply concerned the Muslim world.
The President reiterated Indonesia's strong condemnation toward the decision, which broke international consensus and violated various resolutions issued by the UN Security Council (UNSC) and UN General Assembly (UNGA).
"I hereby call on other countries not to follow [the US] in relocating their embassies to Jerusalem," Jokowi said.
"The relocation has disrupted the peace process and has even threatened the peace itself."
US President Donald Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital in December last year was met with criticism and protests.
The UN subsequently rejected the move and issued a resolution reaffirming that Jerusalem's status must be resolved through negotiations.
Jokowi went on to urge the UNSC and UNGA to discuss and determine further measures to address the issue, while emphasizing Indonesia and its people's commitment to standing with the Palestinian people.
"Palestine is always in the heart of Indonesia's diplomacy," Jokowi added. (JP/Masdar)
