General chairman of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) KH Said Aqil Siroj reiterated that there would be no place for radicalism in the Nahdliyin-based organization and there "there are no NU board members involved in radicalism in the name of religion."
"There is no chance in NU to become radical," Kiai Said said on the sidelines of a scholarly meeting at the NU headquarters in Jakarta on Friday 9/6).
According to him, "no place for radicalism in NU" means that the country's largest Muslim organization has a moderate and tolerant character to all groups, including non-Muslims.
"NU has a tawassuth (tolerant) and tawazun (balanced) character," he said, adding that there were no NU clerics committing acts of radicalism in the name of religion. On the contrary, they adapt their people not to be involved in a dispute, spread hatred, and be hostile to one another.
"They build the character and identity of the nation," said the alumnus of Pesantren Lirboyo (Kediri), Krapyak (Yogyakarta) and Kempek (Cirebok)..
He was of the opinion that the nationalism of NU clerics is no doubt such a must because they do hold an adagium made by KH Hasyim Asy'ari, namely love of the homeland or nationalism is part of the faith.
"Without participating in P4 (Guidelines for the Perception and Practice of Pancasila), NU clerics have protected themselves with nationalism," he said. (Muchlishon Rochmat / Masdar)
