Muslimat NU chairwoman visits landslides-hit areas

Chairwoman of Muslimat NU Khofifah Indar Parawansa visited and reviewed the state of the evacuees in Purworejo District, Central Java Province.

As reported by Antara news agency, the Social Affairs Minister visited the locations that had been buried by landslides.

The minister also handed over compensation and logistical help to the evacuees.

In addition, the minister and a child observer Seto Mulyadi organized games to comfort the children in refugee camps in Purworejo District, Central Java Province.

Children also participated in a trauma healing program organized by volunteers.

They were invited to sing, play and tell a story as part of the efforts to overcome trauma that they had suffered during the incident.

Meanwhile, the minister sat among the children as they sang and clapped.

The search and rescue teams personnel and volunteers had earlier found eight bodies in the landslide-hit locations in Purworejo District, Central Java Province.

Seven bodies were found buried under the debris in Donoroti Village, while another body was recovered in Caok Village, taking the death toll in the village alone to 11, Bambang Agus Purwanto of the Purworejo disaster mitigation office, stated here, Monday.

Landslides buried 16 people in Donoroti and 15 in Caok.

The joint SAR team, comprising military and police officers, among others, continues to look for more bodies.

Landslides also killed one person in Pacekelan Village, and three others in Jelok Village, Purworejo.

Landslides and floods had hit 16 districts in Central Java. The affected districts are Purworejo, Banjarnegara, Kendal, Sragen, Purbalingga, Banyumas, Sukoharjo, Kebumen, Wonosobo, Pemalang, Klaten, Magelang, Wonogiri, Cilacap, Karanganyar and Solo.

The disasters claimed 35 lives, while 25 others were still missing. Fourteen people were injured in Central Java.

Hundreds of houses were damaged due to the floods and landslides that inflicted material losses worth billions of rupiah. (Masdar)
