Muslims told to oppose politization of religion

Grand Sheikh Al Azhar Ahmad Muhammad Ahmad Ath-Thayyeb said the politicization of religion should be opposed together for being capable of affecting the social-political damage in addition to threatening the unity of society itself.

Ahmad Muhammad Ahmad Ath-Thayyeb made the statement when asked about the politicization of religion committed by by a group of Muslims at the NU headquarters in Jakarta on Wednesday (2/5).

"We must see the dangers associated with the practice of the politicization of religion," Ahmad Ath-Thayyeb said.

According to him, the practice was commonly committed by politicians who have bad goals. Bad politicians do not hesitate to use bad and inappropriate ways to realize their political interests.

"Religious norms should make politics better," Ahmad Ath-Thayyeb said, adding that some politicians instead had used religious symbols for their political interests.

The visit of Grand Sheikh Azhar to Indonesia was held in order to introduce the idea of ​​Al-Azhar University related to the moderation of Islam (Islam washatiyyah). He was warmly welcomed by the General Chairman of NU KH Said Aqil Siroj. (Alhafiz//Masdar)
