General Chairman of the Indonesia's largest Muslim organization Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) KH Said Aqil Siroj said that there were Islamic groups using Sura Ali Imran 195 as a legitimacy for their actions in conducting suicide bombings and killing others.
"Whosoever will come out of the house, kill or be killed then his sins will be forgiven and go to heaven. Getting out of the house, bombing, died and others died, go to heaven," said Kiai Said while giving a speech at the launching of Command Center and Smart Card Nusantara Launch at the 8th Floor of NU Building on Monday (22/5).
According to Kiai Said, the context of this verse comes down in the event of the so-called Battle of the Trench (khandak) in Medina in which Prophet Muhammad and his companions were attacked by the infidels. Then, Prophet Muhammad made a ditch to prevent the enemy from entering the city of Medina.
"This is the verse revealed during the battle of the trench," he explained.
However, the Prophet and his companions could still be attacked by the enemy forces. "The Prophet called on the people of Medina. Go on, live or die, kill or be killed, heaven (is a consequence)," Kiai Said explained.
Therefore, the leader of Al-Tsaqafah Islamic Boarding School said, it was not enough to merely read the translation of the Qur'an. They must also understand the so-called asbabun nuzul of a verse and to learn it is not enough by learning in a short period of time. (Muchlishon Rochmat / Masdar)
