Several survey results conducted by the Ministry of Religious Affairs showed that Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) have commonly been in Java, West Sumatra, South Kalimantan, West Nusa Tenggara, and South Sulawesi. Why could not Nahdlatul Ulama-based pesantren be easily developed in a muslim minority province like Papua?
NU prominent intelectual Ulil Absar Abdallah said that currently Salafi-Wahabi Pesantren had been growing in the Cenderawasih earth. Such condition has worried most of the Papuans because the Islamic model propagated by the Salafi-Wahabi pesantren is rigid.
"In Papua, there are many unrest from the Christian community because what appears there is Salafi pesantren," Ulil said at a seminar in Jakarta recently.
According to Ulil, the Christian community will not fight and reject the pesantren established by Nahdliyin (NU members) for propagating moderate character and respecting the local culture.
He added that in places inhabited predominantly by non-Muslim it's necessary to develop a moderate Islam that embraces Ay'ariyah school of thought. Stakeholders should pay more attention to the establishment of moderate pesantren in areas where the majority are non-Muslims. (Masdar)
