Blasphemy law 'alleviates conflict among religions’

Sudarsono, a law expert from the University of Indonesia, has defended the blasphemy law, saying that its existence was still important in order to contain conflict surrounding the establishment of houses of worship.
Testifying Wednesday at a Constitutional Court hearing of the judicial review request of the law, Sudarsono, an expert witness presented by the government, said that the blasphemy law had been the grounds on which the 2006 ministerial joint regulations rests. The joint regulations regulate, among others, the establishment of places of worship in regions.<>
“The regulations have been the reference for regional heads and their people to work together to maintain harmony between followers of one religion and anotherm and in settling disputes in establishing places of worships,” he added as quoted by The Jakarta Post.
The court held its 10th hearing of the judicial review request of the 1965 Blasphemy Law, filed by petitioners of NGOs and self-proclaimed backers of pluralism in October last year. They asked the court to review several contentious articles they said discriminated against certain religious groups, particularly minorities. (dar)
