Candidates must propagate Aswaja teachings

Participants (muktamirin) of the NU 32nd congress considered the importance of picking up general chairman candidates whose broad understanding about what so-called as Ahlussunnah wal Jamaah (Aswaja).
Chairman of the advisory body (Rais Syuriyah) of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Hafidz Usman made the remarks at a press conference here Wednesday, adding that there would be no place for those having liberal line of thoughts to participate in the general chairman elections.

Hafidz said that in line with the congress regulations stipulated on Tuesday (23/3), candidates could pass their candidacy as secured at least 99 votes from regional-regency and international level boards.
In addition, was approved that candidates should have been active in the executive board or NU autonomous bodies and not be board members of any political party.
Hafidz said that there were 33 regions, 485 regency-level branches and 16 special branches having the right to give their vote.
In addition to determining a new general chairman of the PBNU for the period 2010-2015, the five-day congress is also discussing several crucial issues affecting the Nahdliyin (NU followers) including economic empowerment, cooperatives, welfare, vocational education and political education. But the most anticipated event is the election of a man who will lead an organization plagued by the lure of politics. (arm)
