Religious Affairs Minister Maftuh Basyuni said the implementation of the hajj pilgrimage always runs into problems because of the work of "dirty hands."
"Organizing hajj pilgrimages is actually not difficult but the fact is that it is fraught with problems every year due to the work of dirty hands," he said when dedicating a Hajj Pilgrimage Information Center and other religious facilities within the provincial office of the religious affairs ministry in Banten.<>
He said the problems were caused by "dirty hands" such as middlemen`s operations. The problems also arose as a result of the implementation of a market-oriented system by the Saudi government and possibly also by the dealings of the officials accompanying hajj pilgrims.
Maftuh said "let us settle the problems well and let us not cover them up. If they cannot settle them, please do not add to the problems," he said.
He said the problems must be solved in stages and officials` performance be improved. This year, he said, the airlines involved would be increased to avoid dependence on Garuda and shortage of planes to carry the pilgrims.
On the occasion, the minister also advised local religious leaders to maintain inter-religious harmony in the region and help teach followers to not force their will on other religious believers.
"Terrorism will never bring any benefit for the people but only damages," he said. (ant)
