East Java government offers free healthcare to Muslim clerics
NU Online · Sabtu, 16 Januari 2010 | 12:26 WIB
East Java government will provide free healthcare to Muslim clerics who run Islamic boarding schools across the province, Antara reported.
Deputy Governor Saifullah Yusuf (Gus Ipul) said Saturday the initiative would help prevent the clerics from serious illnesses.<>
“Most of Muslim clerics who sought medical treatment at Dr. Soetomo Hospital were already in a severe condition,” Gus Ipul said after accompanying Governor Soekarwo in a meeting with influential cleric Mas Subadar at Roudlotul Ulum Islamic boarding school in Pasuruan.
Soekarwo’s entourage also included former governor Imam Utomo.
Gus Ipul said the government’s medical team would visit the clerics every three months for a health check.
Due to their deep-rooted influence on the society, Muslim clerics have always become the figures politicians must visit ahead of elections. (jp/dar)
