People in the East Java city of Pasuruan did not celebrate New Year on Thursday night, mourning the death of former president Abdurrahman “Gus Dur” Wahid.
As reported by Antara news agency, the town was quiet on the turn of the year after Mayor Aminurrokhman canceled a planned music performance and asked city residents to avoid motorcades to celebrate the new year.<>
Police officers patrolled streets to enforce the ban on motorcades and blockaded all access roads to the city. In the absence of New Year festivities, dozens of people opted to gather at the city’s newly renovated square.
A Javanese puppet show held at the city hall was the only event permitted. A moment of silence to pray for the late Gus Dur preceded the traditional puppet show. (dar)
