A hospital official on Tuesday detailed the last days of KH Abdurrahman “Gus Dur” Wahid in response to rumors that began circulating via SMS over the weekend that the former president had been murdered.
Akmal Taher, director of Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital in Jakarta, told a news conference that Wahid was referred to them by Dr. Sutomo Hospital in Surabaya on Dec. 25 after his condition weakened and doctors determined he needed hemodialysis.<>
For the two years prior to his death, Wahid had to undergo dialysis three times a week
Over the next few days, Wahid underwent dialysis several times and had a tooth extracted because it was abscessed, Akmal said. “Once during the [extraction] his heartbeat became slow but it quickly recovered,” he said.
On the morning of Dec. 30, Wahid’s condition seemed normal, but at 11:30 a.m. he complained of a strong pain in his right buttock.
“At 12:30 p.m. we conducted an ultrasound and found a blood clot in his right hip and half of his left hip,” Akmal said.
Wahid was having difficulty breathing and was moved to the cardiac ICU. Doctors confirmed a large blood clot in arterial branches to his left and right hips.
“At 5:45 p.m. we took a blood sample from the patient. His condition kept worsening. We gave him a breathing device to try to improve his condition,” he said.
Wahid’s condition was reported to the presidential team of doctor’s at 5:55 p.m.
His condition became extremely critical at 6:15 p.m. and doctors attempted resuscitation.
“At 6:45 p.m. the patient was pronounced dead and the news was delivered to his family and the president,” Akmal said. (dar)
