Hundreds protested outside the presidential palace in Central Jakarta on Monday opposing the government`s plan to raise fuel prices and urging the government to lower food prices.
"We reject the plan to raise fuel prices and demand the government be more sensitive to the people`s current living conditions," Wardani, the rally's coordinator, said as quoted by Antara.<>
Protesters asked the government to put policies in place to reduce the price of basic necessities.
They marched from the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle to the presidential palace on Jl. Merdeka Utara, via Jl. Thamrin, causing congestion along the main road.
Members of the People`s Accusers` Front, the Pro-Democracy Activists` Network, the Jakarta Student Mobilization Network participated in the rally.
Similar rallies against the planned fuel price hikes were reported to have occurred in Yogyakarta, Pekanbaru in Riau Province, Surabaya in East Java, West Sumatra, Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan and Makassar in South Sulawesi.
The government decided to raise domestic fuel prices in June due to the upward trend of global crude oil prices. The price of premium gasoline would be raised from Rp 4,500 (about US$0.49) to Rp 6,000 per liter, diesel oil from Rp 4,300 to Rp 5,500 per liter and kerosene from Rp 2,000 to Rp 2,300 per liter.
