With Idul Fitri just around the corner, millions of people are expected to make their way back to their hometowns. To help monitor this mass exodus, the Transportation Ministry officially launched a traffic center at their head office on Friday. The center will have more than 20 big screens broadcasting footage from hundreds of CCTV scattered across Indonesia and would be instrumental in helping officials pinpoint traffic areas.
According to Freddy Numberi, a representative of the ministry, there are 78 areas that are prone to traffic jams in Indonesia. "These are mostly due to pasar tumpah [impromptu markets] and unfinished road constructions," he said as quoted by the Jakarta Globe.

Tunjung Inderawan, director general of railway transportation, said that around 4,500 railway crossings are being monitored. “But there are thousands of illegal crossings that are more dangerous,” Tunjung said.
He added that the ministry would start inspecting illegal crossings and coordinating with regional administrations.
“We admit that it's difficult to monitor so many illegal crossings so we need help from residents, as well as the drivers,” Tunjung said. “Whatever the circumstances are, please make way for passing trains.”
This year, more than 15.5 million people are expected to travel for the Idul Fitri holiday, an increase from 14.5 million last year. (dar)
