In film, NU has the most vital basic materials

Mualim Subekti, the member of the NU Film Board, said that NU with its all cultural expressions in any form and manifestation was the most vital material in making film either documentary or narrative.

Subekti highlighted that NU had abundant cultural heritage resources, ranging from ritual to ceremonial traditions, including its supporting elements.<>

"So it is reasonable enough if most of the features exposed in festival a few years ago was NU's traditions," the prominent film director recently said at a discussion held in the NU Online's office, the Central Board of NU in Jakarta.

According to Subekti there's no one single country in the world having religious expression as rich as that of Indonesia's Muslim people.

"with its abundant, complete, and qualified materials, Subekti added, Indonesia would be expectedly able to be such cultural center especially for cinematography.

"At present, non-western cultural resources have just been represented by China and Iran. Whereas Indonesia can stand equally with them because of the same resources," he said.

Subekti reminded us of the importance of reviving our national film by taking into account of our cultural roots and abundant legacies.

He underscored that the problem of the national film could be traced since the colonial era in Indonesia. He cited Indonesia's film products had lately been dominated by non-indigenous people whose no appreciation to the cultural heritage resources.

"The people whose history and tradition roots can address creativity stagnancy of the national film," he said. (dar)
