A South Korean Islamic organization has sought help from Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), the largest Muslim organization in Indonesia, to secure the release of South Korean hostages in Afghanistan, the South Korean Embassy in Jakarta said.
"The Korean Islam Foundation in the Republic of Korea has sent two letters to Nahdlatul Ulama... to help release the Korean hostages in Afghanistan by conveying their message to Muslim people in Afghanistan," the Embassy said in a press release sent to The Jakarta Post on Friday.<>
The foundation, according to the release, "deeply expects Muslim people in the world to support the release of the hostages".
Taliban rebels took 23 South Koreans hostage recently, killing one of them, Bae Hyung-kyu, on Thursday.
"Killing without reason is not in accordance with real Islamic principles. Islam is a peace-loving religion and appreciates life," the Korea Islamic Foundation said in one of its letters to the NU. (dar)
