Lirboyo bans santri and teens from Valentine's Day

The Kediri's Lirboyo Islamic boarding school (Pesantren) has strongly banned its santri (students) and Muslim teens in the city from  celebrating what called as Valentine's Day which falls on 14 February ahead.

One of the pesantren leaders KH Agus Ibrahim Hafidz made the remarks here Friday, saying that the valentine was not part of Islamic cultures and had even tended to lead to behaviors which are opposed to the religious values.<>

"In short, we do not want to celebrate it, especially if those celebrating it are unmarried teens," Hafidz said.

He further explained that Islam was a religion teaching its adherents to pay more attention to any social relationships including how to deal with the household matters in which every husband and wife should find in one another such things as peace, tranquility and mercy.

The Muslim teens, he added, should be capable of following the values by taking into account of religious teachings.

Hafidz argued that the Valentine's Day was such a momentous event especially for teenagers to a more serious relationship, saying that it would be dangerous for being capable of causing the moral degradation among the teenagers.

He also called on all parents to ban their teens from celebrating the Valentine's day for it will possibly lead to sinful acts. (min)
