Madrassa and pesantren have fighting spirit, says minister

Religious Affairs Minister Suryadharma Ali said, in the history of Islamic education, madrassa and Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) are considerably major Islamic educational institutions which have shown their strong fighting spirit and existence until now.
While opening a camping of madrassa and pesantren throughout Bekasi regency at Bojongmangu district, the minister said that the two institutions had so far given their best service in developing and enhancing Indonesians' intellectuality.
He asserted that there had been many great figures in the counrty produced by the two traditional institutions.
Madrasa and pesantren have, admitted or not, shown a real progress in regard with the national character building.
The minister stressed that the two institutions have met institutional transformations, adding that this was a logical consequence of the growing public and government attention to their existence. (mkf)
