Mass media has become the most effective means to build the Indonesian people's character. At this point, Islamic universities should take part to at least socialize the spirit of Islam.
Professor of the Yogyakarta's State Islamic University who is also staff of Minister of Communication and Infomation Musa Asy'arie made the remarks on the sidelines on an annual meeting of the Alumni Association of Sunan Kalijaga State Islamic University (Ika-Suka) here over Saturday (20/6).<>
As for Asy'arie, television was the most influential mass media in building the Indonesian people's character. Alumni of Islamic universities, he said, had partly devoted themselves to television affairs in the country despite the fact they could not able to control the TV contents.
"There have now been 11 national private televisions, 1 public television while community and regional televisions will always emerge. Actually there have been many alumni from Islamic universities involved in television affairs but (there have been) no many controlling the content. Whereas it is a cultural arena we have," he said.
According to Asy'arie, human resources produced by Islamic universities have now been adequate enough and are ready to take part in coloring mass media in the country.
He said that "through media, the alumni of Islamic universities can maximize their role in such fields as religion, social, and people's empowerment." (nam)
