Military, police deploy 2,000 personnel to safeguard NU congress

The military and the police plan to deploy 2,000 personnel to safeguard the upcoming national congress of Muslim organization Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) in Makassar, South Sulawesi, a local military chief said Saturday.
Maj. Gen. Hari Krisnomo, chief of Wirabuana Military Command, said that snipers would also be deployed in the event, which is expected to be attended by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Tuesday.<>
“I can't tell you how many snipers are to be deployed, we are still going to discuss it,” Hari was quoted as saying to journalists by kompas.com during a show of force in Makassar
A number of ministers and ambassadors are also expected to attend the congress.
The organization said more than 3,000 participants and observers will attend the congress in Makassar. NU is the country’s largest Muslim organization, claiming to have more than 40 million members nationwide.
Six candidates will contest the organization’s chairmanship at the upcoming congress The contenders are Salahuddin Wahid, brother of late KH Abdurrahman “Gus Dur” Wahid, noted intellectual KH Masdar Farid Mas’udi, former chairman of NU’s East Java KH Ali Maschan Moesa, Golkar politician Slamet Effendi Yusuf, former NU secretary-general H Ahmad Bagja and senior cleric KH Said Agil Siraj.
