The Indonesian Council of Ulema (MUI) has asked the US government and religious leaders in that country to take action to prevent the planned burning of the Quran by a church community in Florida.
"MUI appeals to all parties, particularly the US government and religious leaders in the US, to prevent the action to avoid widespread inter-religious conflict in the world," MUI associate chairman KH Ma`ruf Amin said at a press conference here on Tuesday.r />
A church in Florida has called for an "International Quran Burning Day" to mark the 9th anniversary of the attacks on the US Trade Center on September 11.
The provocative call was made by the non-denomination Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville, Florida, through social networks Facebook and YouTube.
The MUI itself has already called on all Muslims in the country not to be provoked by the call as it was also opposed by Christians.
Religious leaders in the country have met to discuss the issue and agreed that the call needs not to be responded to.
They have also expressed their objections to the US government and asked the US to intervene to prevent inter-religious conflict that has been proven to always end in tragedies.(ant/dar)
