General chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Said Aqil Siradj said that he was ready to debate with terrorist leaders especially in interpreting Islamic teachings.
Said made the remarks as he met with leaders of the Democratic Party here on Tuesday, adding that he had experience in dialog with deviant Ahmad Mushaddeq who declared himself a new Islamic prophet.<<>br />
"I ever debated with Mushaddeq and was witnessed by top police officials for approximately four hours and finally he gave up and returned to be Islamic and revoked his admission as a prophet," he said.
In addition to declaring himself a prophet, Mushaddeq also told followers they did not need to pray five times a day, fast during the month of Ramadan or perform the pilgrimage to Mecca - three pillars of Islam that most believers consider obligatory.
Hard-line Muslim groups, including the country's influential Council of Clerics (MUI), whipped up a media frenzy over the sect and threatened to attack its members unless the government arrested its leaders. (nam)
