Indonesia's biggest Muslim organization Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) will all of the time stay committed to safeguard the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI) which is based on Pancasila (Five Principles).
Chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Said Aqil Siradj (Kang Said) made the remarks as addressing a religious gathering at the Miftachussunnah Islamic boarding school (pesantren), Kedungtarukan, Surabaya on Sunday (17/8) evening.<>
Kang Said said that NU had proven its commitment dealing with the importance of the NKRI since its Banjarmasin's congress in 1936 in which NU decided to support what called as Darussalam (peaceful state) rather than Darul Islam (Islamic state.
"Yes, this (Darussalam) is appropriate with the Madina Charter," Kang Said said, explaining in detail about the charter signed by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) himself, Muslims and Jewish community living in Yatsrib (Madinah).
On account of the importance of the charter, NU had always reiterated its commitment to take a stand on Pancasila and the NKRI, he said. (sbh)
