General chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama said that faith without tolerance would lead to extremism and exclusivity and tolerance without faith would lead to gullibility and confusion.
As speaking at a meeting recently held in Rome, Italy, Hasyim stressed the importance of applying moderate religious principles in multi-faith and multi-cultural communities.<>
Hasyim said all Muslims should be able to strike a balance between faith and tolerance, adding the moderates were absolutely different from the liberals.
"The moderates preserve a balance between tolerance and faith, while the liberals seek tolerance at the cost of gradually reducing faith," Hasyim said.
The president of the World Conference of Religions for Peace (WRCP) said that with tolerance, the moderates would strive to live in peaceful co-existence with others of different faith. (dar)
