OIC to hold emergency meeting on Mideast, Flotilla attack

The Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) is to convene an emergency meeting to discuss the peace efforts in the Middle East following the recent "Freedom Flotilla" incident, an Indonesian official said.
"The OIC meeting to be held on Sunday, June 6, 2010, is to formulate a joint stand on the Gaza Strip problem, especially after the flotilla raid on Monday (May 31)," the Foreign Ministry`s spokesman, Tengku Faizasyah, said at a press conference here Friday. />
He said the emergency OIC meeting was designed not only to condemn the attack on the humanitarian ship convoy but also to determine further steps to demand Israeli responsibility for the incident.
OIC would also ask the international community to investigate the incident that had caused worldwide outrage and several countries to recall their diplomatic envoys from Israel.
Faizasyah said the flotilla incident was no longer an inter-religious issue but a humanitarian one of the entire world`s concern because the flotilla was carrying hundreds of international volunteers and parliament members.
"We need to raise international concern about this humanitarian tragedy together, and call for an international investigation of the incident," he said.
The Indonesian government would urge the international community not only to condemn the incident but also to take firm measures.
As a Muslim organization, the OIC was expected at its meeting to urge the United Nation`s Human Rights Council (UN HRC) to come up with a resolution on Israel.
"We hope that Indonesia as an OIC member will move the meeting to adopt measures to make Israel abide by international laws," he said.
Faizasyah said that Indonesia must use every forum to raise international opinions including the OIC.
It was earlier reported, Indonesia had managed to convince the UN HRC in Geneva, Switzerland, to establish an independent investigation mission to investigate the Israeli attack. (ant/dar)
